Medicaid redetermination is the process through which states redetermine an individual’s Medicaid eligibility. Medicaid recipients deemed ineligible will have their Medicaid benefits terminated.
The following states may terminate members’ Medicaid benefits starting on May 1:
If a Dual Special Needs Plan (D-SNP) member’s Medicaid benefits are terminated, they will fall into the loss of SNP grace period. During the grace period, which generally lasts six months, the member will be subject to cost sharing that was previously paid by their state’s Medicaid program. The member is eligible for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) for loss/change in SNP eligibility and can enroll in a different plan. Refer to the Election Period Booklet on Learning Lab for information related to this SEP.
If the member is at risk of losing their Medicaid status, you should receive a secure email notifying you of their change in status, which is available to preview in the D-SNP section of our member communication page.
There will be an outbound call and direct mail campaign for most D-SNP members. When a member falls into redetermination they will receive letters (at 30 days, 60 days and 90 days) from UnitedHealthcare offering to help with the process. Members need to provide authorization for us to assist in the redetermination recertification process. You can preview the letters on the D-SNP section of our member communication page.
Some states are currently excluded from this outreach: Arizona H0321-002 (AZ H0321-004 is in scope), Florida, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Tennessee, Washington DC, and Wisconsin. This is subject to change. Please visit the member communication page for updated information on excluded states.
For state-specific information, please visit your state’s department of health website.
